The demand for experienced Business Analysts increases as the Business Analysis profession becomes more globally recognized and standardized, and employers acknowledge the value Business Analysts bring to their organizations. The Business Analyst plays an integral role within the business, uniting current industry knowledge, practical tools and techniques to deliver quality project solutions on time and within budget. Whether you are new to the profession or a seasoned Business Analyst, you will benefit from the knowledge and practical application of standard tools and techniques used in many industries today.

This 4-day course covers the underlying competencies, Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring and Requirements Communication and Management knowledge areas from the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge ® (BABOK®). During this course, you will gain insight into the Business Analyst profession, the role Business Analysts play within an organization, the necessary skills required, and valuable applicable tools, techniques and methodologies for immediate use back on the job. This course focuses extensively on how to develop thorough requirements elicitation and management processes while providing you with the opportunity to practice effective oral and written communication, documentation and facilitation skills. You will identify and analyze BA project deliverables within the project lifecycle. In-class exercises will enable you to assimilate learning objectives.

This and related courses will help to prepare you for the Certified Business Analysis ProfessionalTM (CBAP®) designation.

This course is based on the Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® version 2.0.

Course Objectives

Participants will gain practical skills to:

  • Evaluate business analysis underlying competencies to gain an appreciation of how Business Analysts add value to an organization
  • Distinguish and give examples of the differences between business analysis and project management
  • Examine the profession, global standards, the professional organization and trends in the industry
  • Illustrate an effective requirements management process
  • Integrate effective writing practices into business analysis communication and documentation
  • List and give examples of different requirement types
  • Describe the steps required to complete a thorough stakeholder analysis
  • Produce the elements of a good Requirements Management Plan
  • Prepare documents like:
    • Functional decomposition diagram (Work Breakdown Structure, WBS)
    • Risk Analysis Plan
    • Communication Plan
  • Interpret how the business analysis activities contribute to overall product/solution

Instructor

As a Senior Instructor in Business Analysis, Keith Sarre draws on over 25 years of private sector business experience in financial services, professional services, utilities and telecommunications. He has acquired a deep understanding of the business analyst role from several viewpoints, having successfully fulfilled both client-facing and internal software development assignments in finance, energy retailing, pension trust, human resources and IT. He has participated in projects of various size and complexity at many high profile organizations such as: Deloitte, Accenture, ScotiaTrust, TD Canada Trust, The Canadian Depository for Securities and Cogeco Cable.

In past years, Keith has worked in the trenches leading business analytical initiatives and more recently mentoring BAs in business analysis methodology. He is skilled in requirements engineering and business process modeling using structured analysis and Object-Oriented UML, and has led all systems development life cycle phases from discovery to user acceptance testing.

In recent years, Keith has demonstrated a keen interest in the advancement of the Business Analysis profession, as an early member of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA™), a reviewer of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK™), as one of the 1st 100 practitioners globally to acquire the Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP™) designation, and by switching his career focus to sharing his wealth of practical experience in a more formal instructional role. Already Keith has earned a reputation as an exceptional instructor, being able to add meaning and colour to concepts being taught by injecting real life incidents he has encountered along the way.

Parking

Due to recent changes in the parking regulations at Dalhousie University, parking is extremely limited. Daily parking passes are available and we strongly recommend that you arrive on campus before 7:45 a.m. Parking passes can be purchased for a fee of $11.32 at the Security Office located in the basement garage (Seymour Street entrance) of the Marian McCain Building (corner of University Avenue and Seymour St.) Security will provide you with the location of the parking lots. The at the corner of Coburg Road and Oxford Street is the suggested parking lot. Please note you can no longer park in the Dunn Parking lot as it has recently been changed to reserved parking only.

Continuing Education Units

3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded for participation in this course. One CEU is equivalent to 10 classroom hours or 10 professional development hours (PDHs). The CEU is an internationally accepted uniform unit of measurement in qualified courses of continuing education.

Cancellation Policy

If a withdrawal is made up to 10 business days prior to the start of the course, the full fee will be refunded. If a refund is requested after that date, a 20% administration cost will be deducted. You may substitute another to attend at no additional charge. If the course is cancelled for any reason, we will contact the registrants and provide a full refund. Dalhousie’s liability is limited to the return of the registration fee.
